Why are some amplifiers more expensive than others, even though they say they have the same wattage?

A lot of factors play into this. There are a number of manufacturers that display false wattage ratings on their amplifiers. Cheaper amps will try to put out the wattage they claim, but it’s not a clean signal which can actually damage your speakers. A good rule is comparing the retail value to the cents per watt. If it's more than 50 cents per watt, then most likely it will do what it says and perform well. Another thing to look for is the fuses in the amp and total the number of fuses. Most amplifiers, for every 10 amps of fuse you can expect around 100 - 150 watts depending on the efficiency of the amplifiers. For example, a 1,000 watt amp you should have at least 60 amps of fuses. As with most products you get what you pay for. The more you can spend on an amplifier the better your system will potentially perform.

I have a buddy that has two 10's in his car, and I have two 12’s and his car is louder than mine. What’s the deal?

Without seeing the vehicle and the subs, it is very hard to pinpoint.  Generally, the other system is matched better or has better quality equipment. For example, if your subs are rated at 400 watts RMS each you should have an amp that produces around 800 watts RMS. Like the previous question, you need to be cautious. Some subs say they handle 1,500 watts, when in all actuality they only can handle approximately 250 watts. Another possibility, the subs could be in the wrong size box or in a ported box not properly built for your subs. The amplifier might be tuned wrong, not wired correctly, or have the wrong size power wire. The best thing to do in this situation is bring the vehicle by, and we will take a look at it and give you our professional opinion.

I’ve been told by my dealer that adding anything aftermarket will void the warranty on my vehicle. Is this true?

In our experience, for most cases, no. However, there are some exclusions when making modifications to your engine. The reason many car dealers say this is because they have seen instances where aftermarket work was done and caused damage to something on the vehicle. In most cases, the service was performed by someone that was not qualified to do the installation or they tried to do it their self. With over 20 combined years of experience, Mobile Concepts is more than qualified to perform any of your car audio installation needs without the worry of voiding your factory warranty.
